It was an uneventful Thursday evening in the summer of 2005, except for that serendipitous number... The 5 of us had gathered for dinner and conversation at a popular musicians hangout called the 5 Seasons Brewing Company. As the evening unfolded, we became acutely aware of the 5 all around us, and it became apparent that one evening of 5 was not enough. We decided to continue riding on the serendipity of 5 a bit further and form a brass quintet (a.k.a. a 5-tet) for a little fun in our spare time.
Destiny seemed to be on our side, and serendipity continued into the first rehearsal. It was apparent from the first few notes that we had an instinctive musical communication that can sometimes take years to build. Led inexorably onward, our little experiment developed into a project, and that project needed a name. It is here where the serendipity of 5 ended, and destiny ground to a halt at a fateful crossroads… In a cruel twist of irony, we who communicated so effortlessly in music fumbled over the rather mundane task of deciding on a name! It took some time (and minor bloodshed) for us to get our mojo back, but we wisely pushed beyond serendipity and numeric superstition (who wants to live their whole life like that anyway, right?), and “Midtown Brass Quintet” ultimately emerged as the best choice (with "Brizzle Quintizzle" a close second...ah, what could have been! I guess we'll never know). We hit the ground running and haven’t looked back since!
